Legislative Update from FOS11

Families of September 11 (FOS11) views the appointment of John Negroponte as the new Director of National Intelligence as a positive step toward fulfilling the mandate of the Intelligence Reform Act of 2004. However, we agree with former 9/11 Commission chairman Thomas Kean and co-chair Lee Hamilton's conclusion that much work remains to be done. The two former Commissioners recently noted in USA Today that key recommendations from the 9/11 Commission Report have yet to be addressed.

With the number of serious international terrorist incidents more than tripled last year (see article below), more attention needs to be paid to the progress our government has made in implementing changes. To this end, Kean and Hamilton have announced that they are planning a half-dozen hearings for June and July that will address this progress. These hearings will coincide with the one-year anniversary of the release of the 9/11 Commission Report. Please know that we at Families of September 11 are working with the former Commissioners and their staff to focus attention on these discussions. We will get you a schedule for the hearings as well as commentary as it becomes available. We also encourage you to visit our revised Legislation/Policy page on our website to stay up to date with these issues.
