FOS11 Statement on the Creation of WMD Commission

This summer President Bush signed into law the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007.  Families of September 11 applauds the work of Congress on the passage of such a historical and important piece of legislation and the President for signing it into law.

The Act called for the creation of a Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.  Given terrorists’ stated intent to obtain and use a nuclear weapon to kill four million Americans, this Commission is critical to the safety and security of the nation.

We are dismayed to learn that no funding has been appropriated for this Commission, even though it is estimated to cost less than $10 million. Congress needs to act quickly to appropriate funds, so that commissioners can be named by November 3rd, a deadline set forth in the original legislation.

Congress must not only pass legislation with the intent to increase the security of our country, but must also fund approved initiatives in order for them to make a difference. The Commission to Prevent the Use of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism requires timely funding, the naming of commissioners and the continued support of Congress.

Families of September 11 looks forward to working with Congress and the Executive on this most important issue.  In the case of nuclear terrorism, simply too much is at stake not to act responsibly and expeditiously to do all we can to prevent the next attack.
