"Unity Canvas" Art Project Display
Tuesday, May 02, 2006 - Tuesday, May 30, 2006

The Port Authority of NY and NJ will display the Collaborative, 9/11 Art Project "Unity Canvas" during the month of May 2006. The Unity Canvas Project is an artist-to-artist, New York-based, collective response to the tragedy of September 11.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will be exhibiting a selection of the 300 works from the Unity Canvas. Artists who contributed to the Unity Canvas submitted 12-inch squares of unstretched canvas about 9/11 and the times we live in in 2001 and 2002. Artists used a variety of mediums, including paint, digital, and embroidery to capture their responses to 9/11.

The Unity Canvas Project was started one month after 9/11 by a group of professional working artists mostly based in Manhattan. It has received fiscal sponsorship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Word spread from artist to artist, until artists from every region of the United States and countries all over the world contributed to the project. Some of the countries represented include Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa and Spain. The complete Unity Canvas was first exhibited at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in Brooklyn for the one-year anniversary in 2002.

The Port Authority owned the World Trade Center, and the agency lost 84 employees on 9/11.
