August 10, 2010 Second Annual WTC Run to Remember Scheduled For Sunday, September 5th on Governors Island in NYC The WTC Run To Remember is a celebration of the lives of those lost on September 11, 2001. This event offers a great opportunity for all people who were affected by the events of 9-11 to come together to remember each victim, while running, or walking, around beautiful Governors Island, in the heart of New York Harbor.
The Inaugural World Trade Center Run to Remember, a project of the Run to Remember Foundation Inc., held in September 2009, was a great success. This year's event, to be held on Sunday September 5th, will honor the memory of each victim of 9-11, while raising funds for Families of September 11 and other 9/11 organizations. August 4, 2010 WTC Rescue and Recovery Workers Should Register for Workers' Compensation Benefits Before September 11, 2010
The failure of the House of Representatives to pass the bill for medical treatment of 9/11 victims makes an upcoming deadline for registering for workers´ compensation more critical.
All who worked or volunteered in the vicinity of Ground Zero in the 9/11 aftermath face the deadline of Sept. 11, 2010, to register for future workers´ compensation benefits in case they later develop an illness tied to that work.
"While we hope the Zadroga bill will be re-introduced and passed quickly, its defeat makes it more important that 9/11 workers and volunteers register for workers´ compensation," said Joel Shufro, executive director of the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health. "Only by registering now will they be eligible for compensation and medical treatment if they become ill down the road from their exposures at the World Trade Center."
The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 would help to cover the medical costs and lost wages of workers who become ill from exposures at the trade center. The bill was defeated in a floor vote last week. Although House members reportedly plan to bring it up for another vote in the fall, there is no guarantee it will pass, Shufro said.
Meanwhile, the deadline for registering for workers´ compensation is fast approaching. It is estimated that up to 100,000 workers and volunteers who performed 9/11 rescue, recovery or cleanup work are eligible to sign up with the state Workers´ Compensation Board. As of early July, 40,633 had done so.
More than 20,000 have developed serious health problems from exposure to toxic dust or fumes at the site or mental disorders caused by psychological trauma associated with their work. The most common illnesses linked to World Trade Center exposures include diseases of the upper respiratory system.
Symptoms from exposures can take years to show. Even now, nearly nine years after the attacks, approximately 200 workers and volunteers enroll each month in World Trade Center monitoring and treatment programs, reporting the onset of symptoms. Altogether, about 45,000 have enrolled in such monitoring programs.
Any eligible person who registers by the Sept. 11, 2010, deadline will have the right to file a 9/11-related workers´ compensation at any time in the future, no matter when 9/11-related symptoms began to occur. If a worker is or becomes ill and the claim is established, workers´ compensation will fully cover the cost of treatment, including prescriptions and hospitalization.
Most people who performed any rescue, recovery or cleanup work after 9/11 are living in the New York metropolitan area. Others have moved to other states or may have left the country. Many may be unaware that they are at risk of developing 9/11-related disorders. They may also be unaware of the upcoming registration deadline.
Those eligible to register include most people who performed any rescue, recovery or cleanup work, no matter how briefly, paid or unpaid, in lower Manhattan south of Canal or Pike Streets between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 12, 2002. It also includes those who worked at the Staten Island landfill, the barge operation between Manhattan and Staten Island or the New York City morgue (or any of the temporary morgues set up during that period).
There is no residency or citizenship requirement to register for 9/11-related compensation. If workers or volunteers meet other eligibility criteria, it does not matter whether they live in New York State. Their immigration status-whether documented or not-also does not affect their eligibility.
For more about eligibility requirements and the registration procedure, workers and volunteers may go to the NYCOSH website at www.nycosh.org, or call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline, 1-866-WTC-2556. State guidelines and forms are here: http://www.wcb.state.ny.us/content/main/forms/WTC-12.pdf
The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) is a non-profit education and advocacy organization, dedicated to ensuring that every worker has a safe and healthy workplace.
NYCOSH works in partnership with the United Church of Christ to provide assistance to all workers, volunteers and community residents who were adversely affected by toxic contamination resulting from the attack on the World Trade Center.

The film was recently named best documentary at the LA Shorts Fest '10. The documentary centres on Jordanian Ashraf Khaled, who lost his father and in-laws in one of the 2005 Amman hotel bombings when his wedding party was targeted by suicide bombers sent by Al Qaeda in Iraq.
The Global Survivors Network (GSN), which was launched in Amman last November in a ceremony marking the hotel bombings, aims to empower the survivors of terrorist attacks to make their voices heard. GSN has sponsored events in Jakarta, Indonesia and Lahore, Pakistan, with its members helping to establish local associations to raise awareness of the needs and stories of those impacted by terrorist acts.

March 30, 2010 City to Begin New Operation to Identify WTC Victims Good Afternoon,
As part of our ongoing efforts to identify victims of the World Trade Center attacks, on Monday, April 5, 2010, the City of New York will begin conducting a comprehensive, three-month sifting operation for material that was recovered at or in the vicinity of the attacks since the previous sifting operation concluded in December 2007. The City is opening a forensic mobile sifting platform at Fresh Kills in Staten Island to thoroughly evaluate the material, using the same techniques employed during the prior operation at the facility at 11 Water Street in Brooklyn.
As in the past, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) will lead the upcoming sifting operation, which is described in the attached Memorandum written to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg by Deputy Mayor for Operations Edward Skyler on January 28, 2010. OCME will keep you informed of potential human remains that are recovered.
Finally, please feel free to contact Jordana Zizmor in my office at 212.442.8953 or at 911familyquestions@cityhall.nyc.gov should you have any questions.
Sincerely,

June 18, 2009 President Obama Announces National Community Service Initiative The United We Serve summer initiative begins on June 22nd and runs through the National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11th. The National Day of Service and Remembrance was created by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which President Obama signed in April to help encourage and facilitate community service across the country. During this summer, the President is renewing his call to all Americans to identify needs in their communities, engage in meaningful service to create change – and stay engaged with those projects long after September. The President’s call focuses on four key areas where everyone can have a continuing impact in their community: education, health, energy and the environment and community renewal. To create new service projects, to find service projects in their communities and to share stories about projects that are making a difference, Americans can visit the Corporation’s website, www.serve.gov.
President Obama’s video was distributed via email by the Corporation for National and Community Service. View President Obama’s full video message at www.serve.gov.
“The challenges we face are unprecedented in their size and scope, and we cannot rely on quick fixes or easy answers to put us on the road to recovery,” President Obama says in the video message. “In this new century, we need to a build a new foundation for economic growth in America. My Administration has already begun this work with dramatic new investments in education, health care and clean energy – investments that will create new jobs and lay the foundation for lasting prosperity. But we cannot do this alone here in Washington…’
‘Economic recovery is as much about what you're doing in your communities as what we're doing in Washington – and it’s going to take all of us, working together.”
The goal of United We Serve is to help make volunteerism and community service part of the daily lives of all Americans in order to help build a new foundation, one community at a time. Further details about the June 22nd kickoff are forthcoming.

June 23, 2008 National September 11th Museum and Memorial Update From the Chief Curator & Director of Collections
National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center
1 Liberty Plaza, 20th Floor
New York, NY 10006
Dear Friends and Survivors,
All too many months ago, we had the honor of hosting a meeting of the
Survivor's Network at the offices of the National September 11
Memorial Museum. Today, with the beginning of summer enlivening the
cityscape, we feel it is time to renew acquaintance with all of you.
It is our hope that we might be able to schedule an update sometime
soon, so that we can personally share with you the progress made in
planning both the Memorial and the Memorial Museum.
As you may have heard, March 2008 marked three especially significant
milestones for our organization: attainment of our capital campaign
goal of $350 million; completion of the 100% schematic design phase of
the Memorial Museum's primary exhibition programs; and the safe
extraction and storage of the Vesey Street Stairs remnant, which will
be relocated later this month its future site at bedrock within the
Memorial Museum. Your preservation advocacy played a critical role in
the resolution of this evocative historical artifact, and we are
grateful for your support.
Over the next twelve months, our team will be working to complete
design development of the museum's exhibition programs. At the same
time, we will continue to search for evidentiary materials, oral
histories, photographs and film footage, written accounts, personal
items and keepsakes that can help anchor and more powerfully
authenticate our narrative. With this work schedule in mind, we would
like to renew our interest in hearing from members of the Survivors'
Network who might wish to contribute to our collecting efforts. We are
gratified to note that to date, at least a dozen members of the
Survivors' Network have stepped forward already to donate items,
including written accounts of their experiences on 9/11 and the many
courageous personal journeys that followed. Although not a definitive
list, looking ahead we are especially interested in gathering:
· items worn or carried during evacuation and rescue operations on
September 11, such as footwear, flashlights, communication devices,
and pocket items that have acquired special meaning in light of the
survivor experience
· copies of voice mail, text and email messages sent on 9/11 or
shortly thereafter to loved ones and others outside the World Trade
Center area
· retrospective written accounts of survival and evacuation
· photographs or video footage taken by you on September 11th, just
before, during, and after the events of the day
· photographs of you and others at the World trade Center,
particularly such photographs in which the Towers or distinctive
features of the Towers, such as the windows, the lobby or the
observation deck are visible
· items, including photographs, that may have been returned to you by
the NYPD Property Recovery Unit
· copies of oral histories you may have recorded
· documents and materials pertaining to personal injuries suffered on
September 11th, and therapeutic courses taken to address them
· program materials reflecting ceremonies and other projects
undertaken by survivors and their supporters to mark the
recovery/healing progress
· materials illustrative of kindnesses and compassion extended to you
on September 11th, and thereafter, by strangers and "new" additions to
your community network
· materials illustrative of kindnesses and compassion you have chosen
to extend to survivors of other terrorist incidents, natural disasters
or local emergencies, influenced by your own experiences on, and after
September 11
Amy Weinstein, oral historian and associate curator of NS11MM, would
be pleased to hear from anyone interested in recording an oral history
for the Museum's collection (aweinstein@sept11mm.org; 212-312-8844).
Caitlin Zampella, manager of Special Partnerships, is happy to field
your questions about booking a recording session with StoryCorps
(czampella@sept11mm.org; 212-312-8788). I am honored to serve as the
recipient for all other inquiries, ideas and offers, which may be
channeled to other colleagues on the NS11MM museum Team for prompt
response.
With thanks for your ongoing interest, which is encouraging and invaluable.

January 23, 2008 Clinton, Schumer, Lautenberg, Menendez, Maloney, Nadler, Fossella Call on President to Show Commitment to Victims of 9/11 Attacks by Funding Critical Health Programs Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Charles Schumer, Frank Lautenberg, and Robert Menendez, along with Representatives Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, and Vito Fossella today called on President Bush to provide adequate funding for the health programs for the victims of the 9/11 attacks when he releases his budget request on February 4th. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the estimated need for the health programs in the Fiscal Year 2008 was over $200 million, of which the President only authorized a meager $25 million. In a letter, the lawmakers pressed the President, who came to New York and stood with many of the first responders immediately after the attacks, to show his commitment to them now by making the funding of these vital health programs a priority in his Fiscal Year 2009 budget request. http://maloney.house.gov/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=1555&Itemid=61

We encourage you to visit www.ready.gov or call 1-800-BE-READY to learn how to prepare your families, homes and businesses for all types of emergencies including natural and human-caused disasters. Free materials, including family emergency plan templates and sample business continuity plans, are available through these resources. These materials will provide you with tools to make a New Year’s resolution that will bring you and your loved ones peace of mind. If you wish to take a more active role in your community’s preparedness, get involved by joining or starting a Citizen Corps Council near you. Citizen Corps brings community and government leaders together to coordinate the involvement of community members and non-governmental resources in emergency preparedness, planning, mitigation, response, and recovery.
