Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Center http://www.maacenter.org/ Mesothelioma is a rare cancer which is caused only by exposure to asbestos fibers. On and after September 11, thousands of people in the lower Manhattan area were directly exposed to the toxic cloud created by the collapse of the towers - which contained an estimated 400 tons of asbestos. More and more people are reporting illnesses every day. Due to the latency period of asbestos related illnesses, many of those affected by asbestos are just being diagnosed. The Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Center has developed a comprehensive website to provide timely and accurate information about the diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma and asbestos related illness. Rep. Tim Bishop is co-author of a new bill that would permanently fund the Long Island World Trade Center Monitoring and Treatment Program at Stony Brook University Medical Center and its counterparts such as Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. "What that bill does is take the funding for monitoring and treatment out of the annual appropriations process and make it part of mandatory funding," he said yesterday. "A way to look at it is Medicare for people who were exposed to toxins as a result of the World Trade Center attacks, so it's an entitlement."
